What is Prostate Cancer Treatment?

Prostate cancer treatment option is depend on whether the cancer is contained within the prostate gland(localized), has spread just outside of the prostate(locally advanced) or has spread to other parts of the body (advanced). The treatment option includes:

    • Active surveillance

Active surveillance is a way of monitoring slow-growing prostate cancers which might never progress or cause any symptom. Other than that, the purpose is to avoid or delay unnecessary treatment which could cause side affect your quality of life.

    • Surgery(radical prostatectomy)

Radical prostatectomy is an operation to remove the prostate gland and the cancer contained within it. This is treatment will taken if cancer is thought to be contained within the prostate gland.

    • External Beam Radiotherapy

External beam radiotherapy uses high energy X-ray beams to treat prostate cancer. The purpose of X-ray beams is damage the cancer cells and stop them growing.

    • Permanent seed brachytherapy

Permanent seed brachytherapy involves implanting tiny radioactive seeds into prostate gland. This is also called low dose rate brachytherapy. Radiation from the seeds then will destroy cancer cells in the prostate.

    • Hormone Therapy

Hormone Therapy can help control prostate cancer by stopping the hormone testosterone from reaching the prostate cancer cells. You might have hormone therapy on its own, or with other treatment such as radiotherapy or brachytherapy.

    • Temporary brachytherapy

Temporary brachytherapy involves inserting a source of high dose-rate radiation into the prostate gland for a few minutes at a time to destroy cancer cell. This is also called high dose rate brachytherapy.

    • High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU uses high frequency ultrasound waves to heat and destroy cancer cells in the prostate. It is newer than some other treatments. HIFU is only available in specialist centres in the UK or as part of a clinical trial.

    • Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is one of the treatment for prostate cancer which uses freezing and thawing to kill the cancer cells in the prostate. It is also called cryosurgery or cryoablation. Crotherapy is only available in specialist centres in UK or as part pf a clinical trial.

    • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to kill the cancer cells. It can help and control or delay symptom. You may have chemotherapy alongside other treatment such as hormone therapy, steroids, radiotherapy for advanced cancer and bisphosphonates.

    • Abiraterone

Abiraterone is a new type of hormone therapy for men whose prostate cancer has spread to other parts of the body(advanced prostate cancer) and has stoped responding to other hormones therapy treatment.
